Seva Project with It’s Yoga Nicaragua
Reforestation on the Pacific Coast
An important part in building our Yoga Community in Nicaragua is the Seva projects. Using the yogic term Seva as in selfless service, service without expectations of return or giving back to our planet is a part of the yoga practice and we believe we can help restore and conserve the eco environment in Ostional, Nicaragua where we also have our yoga base.
In 2012 It’s Yoga Nicaragua started a collaboration with Paso Pacifico to replant a very sensitive and unique river bench area in Ostional. Through this conservation project known as “Return To The Forest”, Paso Pacifico and partners are restoring over 1000 acres of native forest and capturing 150 000 tons of greenhouse gases. So far, as of today October 1:st 2014, It’s Yoga Nicaragua have planted a total of 10 600 trees. Of those 7 000 have survived, the rest have died due to vary reasons, mostly forest fires. The idea is to recreate the native variety of different types of trees within the area to provide substantial eco system for endangered animal species like the jaguar. Due to deforestation the jaguar is threatened by extinction in Nicaragua. Our goal is to plant 10 000 trees every year in an area about 130 acres.
Saving Sea Turtles
Our specific goals are, apart from reforestation, also to help Paso Pacifico with saving sea turtles in Ostional. Ostional beach and the nearby La Flor beach being two of the few places where the sea turtles come each year to nest. Close to our Yoga Ranch on the beach we have a sea turtle nursery where women from the village have been able to save more than 8000 sea turtles since 2010. The students of It’s Yoga Nicaragua work together with these women and the population in the village to protect and monitor the turtles’ nesting and hatching of eggs. We want all turtles that come to Ostional, (Refugio National de Vida Silvestre y de Tortugas Marinas) La Flor to be safe from people stealing them to sell on the black market. We have planned all “saving the sea turtle activities” together with Paso Pacifico. Unfortunately we have not yet been able to contribute when bigger masses of sea turtles have arrived. They usually arrive in thousands a couple of times a year. It has been frustrating not been able to time their arrival but nature cannot be foreseen and we are looking forward to being ready the next time.
Costal Cleanup in Ostional
We’ve had two great cleaning days in February and April 2014. In the February cleanup the students of It’s Yoga Nicaragua was cleaning the entire Ostional beach. Thirteen people, both staff and students, participated. We cleaned the 3 km long beach and thus helped the turtles and other animals to not get stuck in or swallow old plastic bags and other dangerous items. We cleaned off about 400 kilos of rubbish. It was a successful day! In April 2014 we cleaned the mangroves. Mangroves are a very sensitive eco environment and the mangrove in Ostional covers a vast area. As this particular mangrove in Ostional is in great danger of destruction we were on an important mission.
A part of our project is to involve the local school kids in environmental conservation and we also help out with bringing useful study material. The local schools in Nicaragua lack the resources both for environmental education and basic learning material. For the second costal clean day in February we involved the local school. The yoga students managed to clean the entire area together with the Ostional kids. We talked to the kids about the situation and how important it is to care for our nature. Our students and the kids got to spend time together and we ended the day with yoga and refreshments.
